Then I remembered the amazing rotisserie chicken and salted whole potatoes in a basket that I had eaten years ago al fresca in Cartagena, Colombia, and the robust chicken soup they had prepared for me recently at their home. That food was miles from the offerings on the brilliantly illustrated Mexican menu they had just passed back to me. I decided then that I had to get out of my Latino culinary comfort zone.
