Chicano Park is not Los Angeles, it’s in San Diego, but those of you who know it, know that it belongs to all of us here in Califaztlan who celebrate and honor our state’s history of struggle and self-determination. The annual Chicano Park Day honors the founding of the park under the interchange of the 5 Freeway and the Coronado Bridge. It’s “founding day” is considered April 22, 1970, when a young Brown Beret named Mario Solis was first to notice bulldozers appearing on the lot under the interchange that the Barrio Logan community hoped to turn into a park.
