This slideshow represents a small portion of the images in an archive held by longtime San Antonio activist Ramon Vásquez y Sánchez. The archive, which is looking for a home where it can be preserved, begins with a stunning image of his socially conscious mother. Taken Sept. 15, 1939 during a Fiesta Patrias procession, it depicts her standing next to a banner of the Native American Voters League. Her stance was one of protest, however, as she and other San Antonians fought the move of the celebration from San Pedro Springs to Municipal Auditorium, where the Mexican Consulate ultimately held the festivities.
