All odds for success were against Felipe de Ortego y Gasca when he was young — an orphan and a high school dropout. In the end, however, he led a full life, as a Marine, professor, scholar-in-residence and an inspiration for students. Felipe, 92, passed away last Saturday, and had served as Western New Mexico University’s scholar-in-residence since 2007.
