There’s one mousey milestone that won’t be marked with a “Get Your Ears On” celebration at Disneyland this year although it endures in Chicano political memory. Back in 1994, California Governor Pete Wilson wielded Prop. 187—a ballot initiative wanting to strip “illegals” of access to basic public benefits and services such as public education—to help win re-election.
