Clark’s directory listed the community’s business telephone numbers, but few individual ones, since hardly anyone owned a home phone. Clark’s directory, however, was a grand achievement. It listed every Carpinteria resident who had a street address, including spouses, and their means of livelihood. As such, the directory was a snapshot of life in the Valley in the year 1940.
