The Austin City Council on Thursday voted to rename Manchaca Road as Menchaca Road. Leading up to the vote, many spoke in favor of the change, calling it a correction to history. Others disputed the origin of Manchaca, telling the council that the street was named for a Choctaw word or a Louisiana Bayou instead of José Antonio Menchaca, who fought for Texas at the battle of San Jacinto and is believed to have camped south of Austin near what would later be called Manchaca Springs.
